With this hand I will lift your sorrows November 4, 2005 1:12 AM

One of the main things I've been doing in the last two months, besides draw for and dream about the HQ manga, is watch movies. Here are my quick opinions on the ones I've seen since I last blogged, in order from the one liked best to the one I liked the least. I recommend the first four.

Corpse Bride (2005) -- Truly beautiful love story, played out perfectly. I cried twice :). The characters were amazing, as were the songs.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) -- I was really impressed by the stuff they added about Wonka's story and the message of family. That really made it more than a kid's flick for me. Depp's version of Wonka was very good; the kids were well casted too.

The Adventures of Robin Hood* (1938) -- Fun old film; I was amazed that something from the 30's could still be so good. Made me happy ^o^. I love Errol Flynn!

Into the Woods (1991 Broadway musical) -- Incredible acting and singing. A bit too much dying in the end, but still. What an great job of weaving together different fairy tales.

Fight Club* (1999) -- Definitely one of the most intense and meaningful movies I've ever seen. It was brilliant and had great acting; I just wish it wasn't so disturbing/gross/freaky. Less disturbing than the book though (I did this for my film adaption paper). I will never see anarchy, nihilism, or Helena Bonham Carter in the same way again (a pity... she was sooo cute in Chocolate Factory ;_;)

Love Story (1970) -- A nice little movie, I guess.

The Verdict* (1982) -- Pretty interesting; I liked the plot.

Grease (1978) -- Entertaining with good songs, though the whole thing was kinda pointless, and the end was a letdown.

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) -- Kind of disappointing. I always loved Wallace and Gromit, but this one was just not very enjoyable.

Apocalypse Now* (1979) -- Most ugly war movie I've ever seen. Too much needless obscenity.

Psycho* (1960) -- Oh man, even with the volume turned lower than the UT2004 noises coming from Weien's computer, this was FREAKY. Lol. Also, I failed to appreciate any of the artistry that was supposed to be in this thing. Ugh.

* Watched for my Film as Lit class. Man, I love that class; I love American Government too. The lectures are so entertaining xD; and my classmates are cool as always. I just hate the homework. (Haha, feel like an incompetent kid again.) I can never quite make the effort to do it earlier than last minute.

Speaking of things that I love, my job is so awesome. It's so fun to be on a team working toward difficult goals when we're all swamped with too many tasks. Now that they have me doing design work, I love it even more. I have the coolest bosses ever.

<3 to Shiowei, Tofur, Ag, Sunnie, Weien, Kash. Thanks for your encouragement, guys :).

Please pray for my baby brother Ian (now 17 months). He went in for surgery this morning for hydrocephalus :/. The surgery went well, but I just hope he recovers quickly and will be fine in the long run.

First of all (not that it has much to do with your post) UT99 (GOTY) is far better than 03,04 (they’re just more eye candy and less fast-paced action)
Fight club was a good movie. The rest I haven’t seen, or disagreed with. I have one sentence reviews of a lot of movies (categorized by what I thought of them) here: http://tsourceweb.com/files/movies-review.txt
cya

Woah… cool movie list, makes me want to start one ^^.

Hey Victoria!I liked the movie reviews! I will keep your opinions in mind next time I go to see a movie!
God bless you always,
DJ

I could’ve sworn I commented on this post… guess not. Sometimes I can’t tell the difference between remembering an intention to do something, and and act of doing something. shrugs Its too bad that you found W&G:CWR to be dissapointing. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve been having doubts. I’ll probably just wait for the video release. I just saw Willy Wonka this weekend. I thought it was quite fun. I’m very sorry to hear about Ian. We’ll pray for him.

I have not see any of the movies you listed there. Kinda strange, I suppose, though my family doesn’t watch many movies, so it’s also normal.
I just had a great idea for you… you know, I’m from Texas, so keep that in mind as you read this: I should make a large brand for the BattleSong ranch, specifically for use on your non-BattleSong-writing bro (though perhaps for use with pink paint rather than a fire?). Then you could brand him with a large "BS" and see if he remembers to write on it in the future ;-)
I’ll be praying for Ian, as well… surgery is never a happy ordeal.
And, good job on the Candid Manga, while I’m here to say it :-)

yeah, i heard about ian and that’s so sad! i hope he recovered well. i was prayign for him, for sure. reading all this made me realize just how much i miss you, vicki! it’s been way too long since we’ve seen eachother and/or had a good chat. wow, youve been watching a good amount of movies there, impressive! i havent seen corpse bride, only the commercials and i thought "they’re encouraging necrophilia?" hehe.
i enjoyed charlie and the choc fact, except for the fact that Depp kindof creeped me out as wonka. he was way too much like michael jackson, and it gave me the shivers! but i was both amused and creeped out by his character and it all kindof balanced out i suppose…
robin hood is a good time.
hm, ive never heard if into the woods, i’ll hafta check that out.*i want to see fight club, but i’ve never really got around to it…
love story-havent seen it yet
the verdict-never heard of it
grease- haha you think the ending was bad for that? check out grease 2, that movie was horrible as a whole. nvm, DONT check out grease 2. what a mistake. i wasted hours of my life. hours of my life i will never get back :(
wallace and gromit: i actually liked that movie, i got a good kick out of it. i never watched the show or whatever it was, so i was suprised that i enjoyed it.
apocalypse now:….dont know, dont care. ;)
Psycho- i haaaate horror movies.
ew..homework. speaking of that….this comment should come to a close right about….

As promised, Chinese class quotes:
Prof: "AM I ENGAGING EVERYONE!?"
Student:"More angry has become a reality."
Prof: "Laughed comes with a sound."
Prof: "Gavin, this sentence? You’re scrambled eggs. You TOTALLY lost it."
Prof: "The understanding has become a reality."
Prof:"Wo xue LE liang nian zhong wen."Student: (in response) "Oh my God."
———-
Math class:
Sub teacher: "You see, for Y to be zero, you have to have a numerator of zero! Do you believe me!?" points at guy
Student: "Yep."
Sub: "No, no, here, look: zero, divided by five, is zero!"Student. "That is zero."Sub: "And, zero, divided by twelve… zero!"*Student: "Will ya look at that."
——-
We don’t get much in math class, other than the time the prof said "No, Cramer was a mathematician and he would not like that."
Corpse Bride: All I can say is, good thing it ended the way it did, otherwise, man, tough decisions!—this one feels for Victor, hyes.
Robin Hood—how old is Errol Flynn now? Think he can still teach me how to laugh like that?
W&G: It wasn’t that bad, I think. Though, I kept having a feeling that I’d be laughing more if I were sixty years old(er).
Psycho: I think the trick was to just watch every other minute of it, because I thought it was pretty hilarious, him with the wig. And unfair, sometimes you’ve just got to sacrifice gameplay for great eye-candy. For me, ONS is the highlight of 2K4 ^^.

I agree with you about Grease. I was so mad at the end. :-P I’m so sorry to hear about Ian. I hope he gets better. :(
hmm…have you seen Nicholas Nickleby? that’s one of my faves. ;)

~~~~~He sighed, looking at his friend tiredly, with one hand on the back of his (own) neck.
"Y’see, Jimino, being Chinese… is, well, it’s when nothing is sanitary until you wash it, at which point it is guaranteed to have become perfectly clean. Does that make any sense?"
One look at Jimino’s face told him that he had made his point perfectly clear.
