November 2005 Archives

With this hand I will lift your sorrows November 4, 2005 1:12 AM

One of the main things I've been doing in the last two months, besides draw for and dream about the HQ manga, is watch movies. Here are my quick opinions on the ones I've seen since I last blogged, in order from the one liked best to the one I liked the least. I recommend the first four.

Corpse Bride (2005) -- Truly beautiful love story, played out perfectly. I cried twice :). The characters were amazing, as were the songs.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) -- I was really impressed by the stuff they added about Wonka's story and the message of family. That really made it more than a kid's flick for me. Depp's version of Wonka was very good; the kids were well casted too.

The Adventures of Robin Hood* (1938) -- Fun old film; I was amazed that something from the 30's could still be so good. Made me happy ^o^. I love Errol Flynn!

Into the Woods (1991 Broadway musical) -- Incredible acting and singing. A bit too much dying in the end, but still. What an great job of weaving together different fairy tales.

Fight Club* (1999) -- Definitely one of the most intense and meaningful movies I've ever seen. It was brilliant and had great acting; I just wish it wasn't so disturbing/gross/freaky. Less disturbing than the book though (I did this for my film adaption paper). I will never see anarchy, nihilism, or Helena Bonham Carter in the same way again (a pity... she was sooo cute in Chocolate Factory ;_;)

Love Story (1970) -- A nice little movie, I guess.

The Verdict* (1982) -- Pretty interesting; I liked the plot.

Grease (1978) -- Entertaining with good songs, though the whole thing was kinda pointless, and the end was a letdown.

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) -- Kind of disappointing. I always loved Wallace and Gromit, but this one was just not very enjoyable.

Apocalypse Now* (1979) -- Most ugly war movie I've ever seen. Too much needless obscenity.

Psycho* (1960) -- Oh man, even with the volume turned lower than the UT2004 noises coming from Weien's computer, this was FREAKY. Lol. Also, I failed to appreciate any of the artistry that was supposed to be in this thing. Ugh.

* Watched for my Film as Lit class. Man, I love that class; I love American Government too. The lectures are so entertaining xD; and my classmates are cool as always. I just hate the homework. (Haha, feel like an incompetent kid again.) I can never quite make the effort to do it earlier than last minute.

Speaking of things that I love, my job is so awesome. It's so fun to be on a team working toward difficult goals when we're all swamped with too many tasks. Now that they have me doing design work, I love it even more. I have the coolest bosses ever.

<3 to Shiowei, Tofur, Ag, Sunnie, Weien, Kash. Thanks for your encouragement, guys :).

Please pray for my baby brother Ian (now 17 months). He went in for surgery this morning for hydrocephalus :/. The surgery went well, but I just hope he recovers quickly and will be fine in the long run.
